A single shade of warm ivory keeps attention on the waffle texture. This is a good design direction when you prefer a blanket without stripes or several colors to coordinate.
The finished width must be planned from an established stitch sample. Waffle fabric can draw inward as the textured rows develop.
Materials and Sample
Choose your yarn, a matching hook, scissors, a tapestry needle and stitch markers. A smooth yarn makes it easier to see where the post stitches belong.
Work at least several full repeats before measuring. Wash and dry the sample using the yarn label’s instructions.
Do not estimate the blanket width from the first plain row.
US Stitch Terms
- ch: chain
- dc: double crochet
- FPdc: front post double crochet
For an FPdc, work a double crochet around the vertical post of the indicated stitch, inserting the hook from front to back and back to front around that post.

Chain 32.
Foundation row: Double crochet from chain 3 to the end, giving 30 stitches. The skipped chains do not count as an additional stitch.
Row A: Chain 2 and turn; this chain does not count. Double crochet in the first stitch. Repeat “FPdc around the next stitch, dc in the next 2 stitches” until two remain. Finish with one FPdc and one dc.
Row B: Chain 2 and turn. Double crochet in the first 2 stitches. Repeat “FPdc around each of the next 2 stitches, dc in the following stitch” until one remains. Double crochet in that final stitch.
Alternate A and B, finishing after A.
Scale and Finish
The starting chain must be a multiple of 3, plus 2. Use the washed sample to select a count for your intended width.
Continue in ivory to your preferred length. For a simple version, leave the edges unbordered and weave in the ends carefully.
Check the sample’s weight before planning your yarn purchase: a heavily textured fabric can need more yarn than its appearance suggests.
