Blue and Ivory Ripple Baby Blanket: Planning Gentle Crochet Waves

October 20, 2026

Powder blue, ivory and pale taupe create a calm palette for a ripple blanket. The stripes follow the shaping of the fabric, making the rises and dips part of the design.

Start with a small sample. Ripple patterns depend on balanced increases and decreases, and correcting a short practice row is much easier than undoing a full blanket.

Materials

Use three colors of the same yarn, a coordinating hook, stitch markers, a tapestry needle and scissors.

Record your intended width and length. Measure a washed sample to plan the foundation chain; do not measure only the loose starting chain.

Stitch Terms

US terms are used:

  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • dc2tog: double crochet two stitches together

For dc2tog, partially complete a double crochet in each of the next two stitches, leaving the final loop of each on the hook. Yarn over and draw through all three remaining loops.

Practice the Ripple

For this version, chain 27: two repeats of 12, plus 3.

Row 1: Double crochet in chain 4; the three skipped chains count as a double crochet. Work a double crochet in each of the next 3 chains, two successive dc2tog decreases, then a double crochet in each of the next 3 chains.

If more than one chain remains, put 2 double crochets in each of the next 2 chains and repeat the sequence beginning with the three individual double crochets.

Finish with 2 double crochets in the final chain.

Following rows: Chain 3, turn and double crochet in the first stitch. Follow the same shaping sequence across, ending with 2 double crochets in the previous turning-chain top.

Build Your Blanket

Use a foundation of 12 times your chosen repeat count, plus 3. Choose that repeat count from your sample.

For this color concept, try four rows blue, two ivory, four taupe and two ivory. Keep repeating the sequence to your chosen length.

Leave the natural wavy ends as part of the design. Weave in all ends and follow the yarn’s care instructions.
