Sage and Cream Moss Stitch Baby Blanket: A Practical Crochet Guide

October 20, 2026

Sage green and warm cream make a gentle color combination for a handmade blanket. For this design, the interest comes from alternating stripes and a small, woven-looking stitch texture.

Moss stitch has a relatively flat surface. If you want large raised bobbles, you will need a different stitch pattern.

Materials and Planning

Choose two colors from the same yarn range, a hook suited to that yarn, scissors, a tapestry needle and stitch markers. Check the yarn label for washing instructions.

Decide on your intended blanket dimensions before buying the full yarn quantity. Make a sample in the stitch below, wash it according to the yarn label and let it dry before measuring.

The sample chain is for practicing the stitch, not a guaranteed baby blanket width.

Abbreviations

US crochet terminology:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • ch-space: the opening beneath a chain

Practice the Stitch

Start with 24 chains.

Row 1: Place a single crochet in chain 4 from the hook. Continue across by chaining 1, leaving the next foundation chain unworked, then single crocheting in the following chain. Finish with a single crochet in the final chain.

Row 2: Chain 2 and turn. Single crochet in the first chain-space. Continue with chain 1 and a single crochet in each following chain-space, passing over the single crochets below. Place the final single crochet in the edge space beneath the previous turning chain.

Repeat Row 2.

Turn the Sample into a Blanket

This version requires an even foundation-chain count. Use your washed sample to choose a larger even count, then check the width after several rows.

For the proposed color arrangement, alternate six rows of sage with six rows of cream. These row numbers are a styling choice; they do not represent a fixed stripe height.

Continue to your chosen length, finish the yarn and weave in the ends. A border is optional.

Keep the Edges Even

Mark the final edge space so it is easier to find. Missing that space can make the blanket narrower as you work.

Save your hook size, yarn details and washed sample measurements so you can reproduce the project later.
