Two-Colour Moss-Stitch Scarf

Create a beautiful and cozy two-colour moss-stitch scarf that’s perfect for keeping warm during the cooler months. This project is suited for confident beginners and uses a lovely combination of cream and dusty blue wool-blend yarn. Follow the instructions carefully to create this flat striped scarf measuring approximately 18–20 cm wide and 150 cm long.

Materials and Tools

  • Approximately 300–400 g medium-weight, soft wool-blend yarn: cream and dusty blue
  • Approximately 5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Blunt yarn needle
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

Skill level: confident beginner. Flat striped scarf approximately 18–20 cm wide and 150 cm long. US terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet. Moss stitch uses alternating sc and ch-1 spaces. No fringe or border is included.

  1. With cream yarn, ch 32 loosely.

    • Row 1: sc in the fourth chain from the hook. Repeat (ch 1, skip 1 chain, sc in the next chain) fourteen times, ending in the final foundation chain. You have 15 sc, 14 ch-1 spaces and a beginning chain section.
  2. Row 2: ch 2, turn. Skip the sc directly below the turning chain. Work 1 sc in the first ch-1 space, then ch 1. Continue working (sc in the next ch-1 space, ch 1) across. After the last ordinary ch-1 space, work the final sc into the beginning chain space at the far edge. Total: 15 sc; the turning ch-2 forms the edge space for the following row.

  3. Row 3 and all later rows: ch 2, turn; skip the first sc. Work (sc in the next ch-1 space, ch 1) across the ordinary spaces, then finish with 1 sc in the turning ch-2 space at the far edge. Keep 15 sc per row. Do not work the main-body sc into the tops of the previous row’s sc.

  4. After several rows, measure the width without stretching. If it is not approximately 18–20 cm, adjust hook size or restart with a different even foundation-chain count. With this method, the sc count per row is half the foundation-chain count minus one.

  5. Make 10 rows cream, then 10 rows dusty blue. Continue alternating ten-row colour bands. Change colour on the final yarn-over of the last sc in the preceding row; make the next turning chain with the new colour. Cut the unused colour with enough tail for weaving in rather than carrying it up the long side of each band.

  6. Continue until the scarf measures approximately 150 cm, or your preferred length. The last band can be shorter if needed. Keep both edges straight and check the stitch count regularly.

  7. Fasten off. Weave in every colour-change tail securely on the wrong side, following stitches of the same colour. Do not add tassels, fringe or edging.

  8. Dampen or wash according to the yarn care instructions. Lay flat, gently straighten the edges and dry completely without overstretching the length.

Note: this original pattern draft has not been physically test-crocheted. Finished dimensions and yarn amounts are estimates.
