Cotton Soap-Saver Pouch

Create a handy and eco-friendly soap-saver pouch with this simple crochet project. Ideal for confident beginners, this pouch will help you extend the life of your soap while making your shower routine more enjoyable.

Materials

  • Approximately 25–40 g light-to-medium-weight 100% cotton yarn in sage green
  • Approximately 3–3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Blunt yarn needle
  • Measuring tape
  • Your chosen bar of soap for checking fit

Instructions

Skill Level: Confident Beginner
Target Finished Size: Approximately 9 × 13 cm; adjust to your soap.
US Terms: ch = chain; sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; sl st = slip stitch. Turning ch 1 does not count as a stitch.

  1. Make two identical panels. For each panel, ch 17.
Row 1: starting in the second chain from the hook, work 1 sc in each chain. Total: 16 sc.

  2. Row 2: ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each stitch. Total: 16 sc.
Repeat until the solid portion is approximately 10 cm high. Check the width after a few rows: aim for approximately 9 cm. If adjusting the foundation, keep an even number of sc and make the foundation chain one stitch longer.

  3. Check the two panels against the soap before adding the eyelets. Held around the bar, the edges should meet loosely enough to accommodate its thickness and the seams. Add width or solid rows if necessary; both panels must match.

  4. Eyelet row: ch 3, turn; this counts as the first dc.
Skip the first sc directly below the chain. Repeat (ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in the next sc) seven times; work 1 dc in the final sc. For the 16-stitch version you have 9 dc including the beginning chain and 7 ch-1 spaces. If using a different even stitch count, continue the repeat until only the final sc remains, then dc in that last sc.

  5. Top edge: ch 1, turn.
Work 1 sc in each dc and each ch-1 space, including the top of the beginning ch 3. Total: 16 sc for the original size. Fasten off. Make the second panel to match exactly.

  6. Place the panels together with right sides facing inward and eyelet rows aligned at the top.
Sew the two side edges and bottom edge together through matching stitches and row ends. Leave the upper opening unsewn and keep all eyelets clear. Turn right side out and weave in the ends.

  7. Make a matching crochet chain approximately 45–50 cm long, leaving secure ends.
Thread it alternately in and out through the eyelets across the front and then across the back, around the opening. Both ends should emerge together near one side seam. Do not sew the cord to the pouch.

  8. Insert the soap, gently draw the cord to close the opening and tie loosely.
After use, rinse the pouch and let it dry thoroughly in a ventilated place. Wash according to the yarn label. No beads, tassels, or separate hanging loop are included.

Note: This original pattern draft has not been physically test-crocheted. Finished dimensions and yarn amounts are estimates.
